On this day in 1868, the Democrat majority expelled all 28 African-Americans from the Georgia state legislature. The ousted legislators, all Republicans, had offended the neo-Confederate establishment by supporting the civil rights of emancipated slaves. Henry Turner (R-GA), an AME bishop and state legislator, was one of the most influential African-Americans in the 19th century. In his last speech before being expelled, he said:

As some of you already know, Im currently unemployed and hunting a new job. This has actually proven to be more work than having a job. Its the first time Ive been out of work for longer than a week or two, and its frustrating. The whole process of applying for unemployment, wallpapering the town with job applications and stressing over bills is frustrating to say the least. For me, its uncharted territory.

Last week brought good news for those of us who believe that illegal aliens and non-citizens shouldnt be violating federal and state laws that prohibit them from registering and voting with impunity. The Justice Department agreed to settle a federal lawsuit filed by the State of Georgia (Georgia v. Holder) that will allow Georgia to verify the citizenship status of newly registered voters.Georgia filed the lawsuit in June because the DOJ objected to the states verification procedures, calling Georgias process seriously flawed and claiming it would have a disparate impact on minority voters. Because Georgia is covered by Section 5...

New rules expected from the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) are causing massive heartburn for Big Labor and fueling a new backroom push in Congress for a taxpayer bailout of underwater union pensions. With nine Republican co-sponsors of the House bill, Big Labor is pushing for passage during a lame duck session after the November elections. ........ A bill introduced by Sen. Bob Casey (D-Penn.), and a bill from Rep. Earl Pomeroy (D-N.D.) in the House, would for the first time put taxpayers on the hook for these underwater union pension plans. ........ Moodys Investors Service estimates a whopping $167...
